Job Opportunity:

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Casualty Underwriter to join our West Coast Casualty team based out of our San Francisco or Los Angeles office locations.

This role is a great fit for an Assistant Vice President (AVP) to Vice President (VP) level underwriter or broker with at least 8 years' experience working in casualty, ideally in excess casualty or E&S casualty, who is also hard working, intelligent, passionate, and always striving towards excellence. The experienced Casualty underwriter will be responsible for expanding and developing new business opportunities through production and marketing calls with brokers and clients, prequalifying new business and utilizing underwriting acumen to identify and select sound casualty risks.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Develop and grow the Casualty book of business which includes primary general liability, lead umbrella, and excess liability for various classes (e.g. General Casualty, Energy, Transportation, and Products).
  • Establish, develop, and expand broker and customer relationships in the Western Region.
  • Work closely with loss control, claims, and legal teams to evaluate risk and provide solutions to customers.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, and make quick decisions while maintaining underwriting integrity.
  • Maintain a profitable renewal book.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • Minimum 8 years Casualty underwriting or broking experience.
  • Strong underwriting acumen.
  • Existing broker & customer relationships.
  • Ability to work both independently and to collaborate with all levels and disciplines.
  • Ability to work within a fast paced, customer focused & team environment.
  • Strong communication skills including advanced negotiation and presentation experience.

The base salary range for this position in San Francisco or Los Angeles is $150,000 - $215,000 along with annual bonus eligibility. Total compensation for a candidate is determined by their relevant skills, location, and experience.
